There’s a reason that the birthing process is called “labor” — it’s a lot of work. And while it’s easy to focus on the stress and discomfort the mother is feeling, a baby is also experiencing a lot of strain to be born into the world.
While many scoff at the very idea of taking an infant to a chiropractor, it’s their tiny bodies often need it most to ensure healthy and comfortable development. In today’s post, we’ll explore the impact that the birthing process has on infants, the conditions they may develop because of it, and how an infant chiropractor can help treat these conditions.
If you have a baby who suffers from any of the following conditions, don’t hesitate to reach out to Senara Health and Healing Center & Spa in Peoria. Our family chiropractor is trained to administer chiropractic care to people of all ages.
The Trauma of Birth
Each and every birth is unique and has different factors that affect the delivery process. “Birth trauma” refers to the strain that the baby suffers during the delivery process. Birth trauma can be caused by:
- Too short of labor
- Too long of labor
- Lack of cervix dilation
- The use of Pitocin, a drug the strengthen contractions
- The use of forceps
- The use of vacuum extraction
- The umbilical cord wraps around the baby’s neck
- C-section delivery from lack of progress
- Pulling on and twisting the baby’s head to deliver the body
With such an extensive list of stress factors that cause birth trauma, it’s no wonder that some infants are so fussy. The outcome of these stress factors are evident as well. Viola Frymann, an osteopathic doctor, studied more than 1,500 babies in an eight-year period and examined them for signs of birth trauma. The study revealed that:
- Only 10% of newborns has freely mobile skulls and perfect cranial mechanisms
- 10% of newborns sustained severe head trauma
- 80% of newborns experienced some sort of strain pattern to their cranial mechanisms
Over time, this strain and trauma will affect the baby’s growth and development, which can cause a variety of health conditions.
The Effects of Trauma
The strain to a newborn’s cranial mechanisms can cause neurological dysfunction, which can present itself in a variety of conditions. An infant has probably sustained some degree of nerve dysfunction if they:
- Have trouble breathing
- Spit up often
- Are irritable or have colic
- Have difficulty latching to breastfeed
- Have balance issues
- Have trouble sleeping
- Are reaching developmental milestones slowly
With a lack of attention to the prevalence of birth trauma and its effects, many of these conditions are written off as signs that you simply have a fussy baby. These conditions are treatable though, and that’s where an infant chiropractor comes in.
Infant Chiropractic Care
The strain of birth can cause nerve dysfunction and spinal injury, which affects how well your baby develops and functions. 65% of neurological development occurs within a child’s first year of life. Their spine lengthens by 50% within their first year as well. With so much growth and development happening, it’s important to ensure that your baby’s neurological system is functioning at its best.
When a chiropractor makes an adjustment on an infant, they’re working to realign the communication between the brain and the body as well as the position of the spine for healthy growth and development.
Infants and children who are taken to a pediatric chiropractor regularly are more likely to experience symmetrical bone development, healthy curves in the spine, better nervous system function, and even a stronger immune system.
This is because all of these body systems are affected by the alignment of the spine and spinal cord. When the spine isn’t putting pressure on the body, the body is able to function and develop more efficiently. And when the spinal cord isn’t blocked by the misalignment of the spine, the nervous system can process all the functions of the body effectively.
