It’s All About Creating “Micro-Wounds”
Literally, microneedling is a procedure that uses micro-fine needles to pierce the surface level of the skin. The tiny punctures (or micro-wounds) in the skin stimulate the body’s healing mechanisms to repair the damaged tissue. This results in a complete rejuvenation of the skin appearance as collagen and elastin rebuild. Skin becomes tighter, smoother, and healthier looking after the procedure.
Microneedling is performed in office, and treatment last about an hour. Even better, is that the procedure only uses topical anesthetic on the skin. No anesthesia or hospital time!
The best part of the Microneedling procedure? Minimal downtime. Unlike surgical procedures that require weeks of recovery, microneedling only requires a few days of recovery. Within 48–72 hours after the procedure most are able to resume their full activities. After the procedure, skin is plump and pink for a couple of weeks. This is due to inflammation and superficial swelling of the skin.
Long-term results include an increase in collagen and elastin production in the skin, helping it remain tight, radiant, and supple.
Benefits Of Microneedling
Along with improved elasticity and texture of the skin, microneedling has other great benefits. Additional benefits include:
- Reduction of scar tissue
- Reduced fine lines
- Improved appearance of cellulite
Microneedling has immediate and long-term results, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t see extreme changes in your skin right away. As the skin heals, underneath the surface, results will gradually begin to show over the course of the next few months.
Another new trend in facials also includes — you guessed it — blood. In addition to microneedling your face, blood is drawn from the patient to access nutrient rich stem cells to be applied as a serum.
It’s not as creepy as it sounds, we promise! The extracted blood (just a small amount) is placed into a centrifuge that spins at high speeds to separate the blood plasmas. Nutrient packed platelet-rich plasma, also called PRP, is extracted from the blood vial to be applied to the skin.
After microneedling, the PRP serum is spread over the surface of the skin. When applied to the skin, the platelet-rich plasma stimulates cell turnover, increase the production of collagen and elastin, and delivering hydration and antioxidants.
While the vampire facial (or PRP facial) is different from microneedling, they can be used together for accelerated results. Microneedling before the PRP masque is applied helps the serum penetrate deeper into the skin.
Recovery time for vampire facials, especially when done with microneedling, is one or two days. The skin will be red like a sunburn, so avoid makeup but apply sunscreen.
One thing you’ll notice about the microneedling and vampire facials at Senara Health and Healing Center & Spa is that our procedures also include PRF or platelet-rich fibrin. PRF is the growth factor in your blood and is extracted the same way PRP is. PRF is injectedto supplement PRP by stimulating cell turnover to create a smoother, firmer skin surface.
Why They’re Popular
Especially when paired together, microneedling and PRP facials are incredibly effective. Those looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines, smooth the surface of their skin, and give it a more radiant and supple appearance could benefit from this procedure at a medical spa.
This type of treatment is popular because it uses the patient’s own blood as a source for treatment. It’s empowering to know that your body has the natural resources to heal itself and improve the appearance of your skin. With a little help from science, we’ve figured out how to accelerate those effects.
The Tools We Use
At Senara Health and Healing Center & Spa, we use only the highest quality, FDA-cleared microneedling device. While a common tool used in many medical spas is a dermaroller, we use the SkinPen. This microneedling device allows us to customize the depth at which the microneedles pierce the skin using ultrafine, medical-grade needles. This not only gives us better control over the procedure, but it also gives you better results!
The SkinPen stimulates the body’s natural process for healing wounds when the skin is punctured, but the microneedles minimize cellular damage. While helping the skin to produce more collagen and elastin, microneedling also helps break up scar tissue.
After microneedling, we then apply the PRP/PRF serum to your face. Thanks to the micro-wounds from the SkinPen, the serum is able to penetrate deeper into the skin to help heal and regenerate cell growth.
People Who Can Benefit
When done professionally, a microneedling and PRP/PRF procedure can improve the health of skin in individuals of any age. Whether your skin is damaged from too much time in the sun, you have scarring from acne, or your skin is starting to show signs of aging and slowed cell turnover, microneedling and PRP/PRF could be perfect for you.
People Who Should Avoid It
Unfortunately, there are certain skin conditions that could be irritated by microneedling and cause a flare-up. Conditions like this include acne, eczema, and rosacea. You can talk to a professional at our medical spa, though, to decide what type of treatment would be best.
Other people who should avoid microneedling and vampire facials are those with blood disorders. Those who have blood clots or blood that doesn’t clot should seek a different skincare procedure.
