Men’s health isn’t always an easy or comfortable thing to talk about, but when issues with your sexual health start to affect other areas of your life, it’s worth talking about in order to find a helpful treatment option.
Peyronie’s Disease and erectile dysfunction (commonly referred to as ED) are two of the most common health issues that men face as they age. In fact, as many as 30 million men experience the effects of ED, and 5% of men are diagnosed with Peyronie’s Disease. With such a widespread issue, why can’t we be more open about it?
At Senara Health and Healing Center & Spa in Peoria, we understand that each aspect of your health has a holistic effect on the rest of your life and wellness. For this reason, we’ve started offering regenerative medicine as a treatment option for a variety of health conditions, including sexual health in men. Learn more about Peyronie’s Disease, erectile dysfunction, and how regenerative stem cell therapy may be able to help relieve your symptoms.
Peyronie’s Disease is characterized by fibrous tissue growing around the penis. This tissue is referred to as plaque, which can cause pain, unusual curvature of the penis, as well as erectile dysfunction.
Unfortunately, not much is known about what causes Peyronie’s Disease. Changes in blood flow, trauma to the area, and genetic predisposition could all play a factor, though.
Pain from inflammation is often associated with the earliest stages of the disease, and even while 90% of men experience natural relief from this pain after about 18 months, 50% of those continue to experience erectile dysfunction.
There are a variety of treatment options currently available to treat Peyronie’s Disease. These treatment options include:
- Oral drugs that block the destructive effects of plaque
- Injections into the plaque
- Topical treatments
- Penile traction
The effectiveness of these treatment options vary, as do their invasiveness. Oral drugs can take longer to work and still remain ineffective on the calcified plaque. Injections are safe and tolerable, but only effective in some patients. Topical treatments do not prove to be a very effective treatment method either.
Penile traction, while effective, can be an uncomfortable treatment method for many patients as it involves techniques to stretch the shaft. Medication is usually required as well with this method of treatment.
Surgery is another effective option, though, is arguably the most invasive. Different techniques can be used for surgery, but most men are satisfied with the treatment.
Stem Cell Therapy For Peyronie’s Disease
With so many treatment options that range in efficacy and invasiveness, it can be difficult to know where to start with treating Peyronie’s Disease. This is where regenerative medicine steps in.
Platelet-rich plasma, also referred to as PRP, can be used to treat Peyronie’s Disease to improve sexual function and decrease unnatural curvature of the penis. PRP contains stem cells, which have the ability to transform into other cells that the body needs to be healthy and function properly.
PRP is derived from the blood of the patient, extracted from the sample, and administered back into the patient. This form of stem cell therapy is groundbreaking and has shown positive results in early trial studies. When injected into the penis, the stem cells are able to multiply and transform into the cells the body needs to repair the damaged, fibrous tissue.
Men who undergo PRP injections as a way to treat Peyronie’s Disease have experienced an improvement in sexual function and a less severe curvature of their penis. At Senara Health and Healing Center & Spa, we use Predictive BioTech, the only FDA-approved stem cell therapy on the market.
While Peyronie’s Disease often causes erectile dysfunction, it is not the only cause. ED occurs in men who have sustained nerve damage or have circulatory issues, deal with chronic stress or emotional trauma, or are at risk for other serious illnesses like heart disease and hypertension.
Men are at a higher risk of developing ED if they:
- Are over the age of 50
- Have high blood sugar
- Have high blood pressure
- Have a cardiovascular disease
- Have high cholesterol
- Are smokers
- Use recreational drugs
- Drink large volumes of alcohol
- Are obese
- Don’t exercise
While ED is more likely to develop as a man ages, it’s onset can indicate other underlying health issues. . This makes it essential to find and treat the cause of ED.
In some cases,a simple change in lifestyle will help relieve the symptoms of ED, as well as treat the underlying health issues. Improving eating habits; increasing physical activity; addressing emotional health issues; and ceasing to smoke, use drugs, or consume alcohol are all options for treating ED.
Medical treatments for ED include:
- Oral drugs
- Testosterone therapy
- Intraurethral (IU) medication
- Assistive devices
While all of these are options for treating ED, not all are effective depending on the cause of the sexual dysfunction. Some methods of treatment, like oral drugs, can have side effects, while others, like implants and surgery, are more invasive.
Stem Cell Therapy For ED
Regenerative medicine offers a new way to treat erectile dysfunction by using the patient’s own cells to treat the issue. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is derived from the patient’s blood, which contains stem cells that are able to transform into and replace tissue that has been damaged.
