Is Your Diet Making You Fat?

As 2015 begins, many of us have made resolutions to be healthier. Improving on your wellness through a better diet and exercise is a phenomenal goal, and one that we applaud with enthusiasm. After all, part of our Live Life Well mantra is centered on the holistic philosophy of whole body health through these very things.
By the time the second and third weeks of the new year roll along, many of us start to see our New Year’s resolution waiver. And by February, some have given up in defeat. Why is this?
In our estimation, a lot of it has to do with a lack of results. You’ve set your goals high to lose weight and feel great. You’ve joined a gym and maybe Weight Watchers. You’ve prepared special meals to eat foods that others promise will help you lose weight, gain energy, and feel positive about life. But the scale isn’t budging. Your energy isn’t improving. And it’s hard to feel positive about life when you are putting so much effort forth and not seeing the payoff you hoped for.
Sound familiar?
What if the reason you aren’t getting results is the “healthy” foods you are eating? Emerging research and observation of patients in the field of Functional Medicine shows that, for many of us, food sensitivities and intolerance could be preventing us from losing weight and feeling our best. The very foods we are eating are causing an adverse reaction in our body that makes weight loss impossible. Food sensitivities can cause bloating, indigestion, heartburn, headaches, fatigue, skin rashes, and a wide range of other symptoms. The inability to successfully lose weight despite following a healthy diet and exercise plan warrants a visit with a healthcare practitioner who can help you identify the underlying issue. In some cases, a larger medical issue (such as thyroid functioning) may be causing your body to not respond to your weight loss efforts. But in many cases, inflammation within the body from IgG food intolerance could be to blame.
As Dr Mark Hyman, director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, says:

If you don’t address inflammation by eliminating hidden food allergens or sensitivities and by eating an anti-inflammatory diet, you will never succeed at effective and permanent weight loss.  Hidden sensitivities and allergies to food you eat every day are making you sick and fat.

The good news is that diagnosis of food sensitivities and intolerance is as simple as a blood draw. In about a week, we will have the results back and can review a low-allergy diet plan tailored to your specific food intolerance list. Simple, straight forward, and easy to follow.
If weight loss still is not achieved by following your food intolerance elimination diet, then we will consider other diagnostic testing to identify the root cause and get you on the path to true health and wellness.
We look forward to helping you reach your goals for 2015. May it be a successful year of health and wellness for you.
