My New Year’s resolution for 2017 is to cook meals at home more often, and minimize take-out and restaurant meals. With a busy schedule, an active 5 year old with very picky eating habits, and a touch of (I’ll admit it!) laziness, this challenge to myself is easier said than done. I needed a catalyst, a guideline to follow, to jump start my goal. So, at the beginning of January, I committed to doing a 7-day Detox program with several other staff members at Senara. I welcomed the additional support of my coworkers. I even recruited my husband to do it with me, and he’s typically a hard sell on these things!

Not My First Detox Rodeo

Now, this was not my first attempt at doing a Detox protocol. In fact, it bears noting that Dr. Kramer helped me through my first detox and major lifestyle change when I first came to him as a patient many years ago. But things were… different then. At that time, I wasn’t just overweight, I was also in the middle of a severe health crisis. When I walked in Dr. Kramer’s door (back when we were still Kramer Chiropractic & Acupuncture Center!), I was covered in hives that would not go away, I had anxiety through the roof, awful insomnia, horrible digestion, and a slew of other issues. At the time, I wanted to try acupuncture. Conventional medicine had failed me, and I was desperate to feel better. Needless to say, I had my catalyst for change and jumped in to the detox protocol full-steam ahead, no holds barred.
Long story short, Dr. Kramer supported me through a pretty long and intense detoxification. Clean eating, no gluten or dairy, TONS of veggies, all home cooked meals, lots of supplements, acupuncture, and no excuses. It was the best thing I ever did for my health. For the sake of full documentation, I give you this picture of Penny and myself circa July 2010. Y’all? We look good! I was in the best health of my adult life, and maintained that for over 3 years!

Flash forward to present day. Everything changed when I had my daughter five years ago. Several unexpected events over these past years compounded with the usual stress and chaos of raising a child, and my health took a backseat to everything else. Dare I say, it went in to the trunk more than the backseat? It was near impossible during most of the past five years to even think about my diet.
But towards the end of 2016, things started to change. Life got a bit more manageable. And I finally felt ready to get back to my pre-child lifestyle.
Those new/old habits I had developed over the last five years? They were extremely hard to break! I had tried detoxing and returning to clean eating at least three times over those years. Massive failure every time. Stress kept derailing me, and I didn’t have a support system to help me work through it. Even my food sensitivity testing results in 2014 couldn’t keep me from eating the things I knew my body responded negatively to! (Story for another day- I created a “2-out-of-3-ain’t-bad” diet for my food sensitivities and lost 10 pounds in a month!)
I needed a plan to get me focused. The Core Restore 7-Day Detox Program was just the thing, and with the support of not only the other Senara staff, but our patients as well, I knew I could do this. Challenge, accepted!
On Saturday January 7, 2017, I started my 7-Day Detox. Seven days with no caffeine, wine, processed foods, eggs, gluten, dairy, soy, corn, and many other foods that filled my daily diet. It goes without saying, I wasn’t quite sure if I would make it through!
Detox Days 1-2
Detox Day 1
The first two days of the Core Restore 7-Day Detox are fasting days. Two protein shakes, a multivitamin, and lots of water were on order. I started on Saturday, and happened to be working that day. I made my shake before leaving the house and drank it slowly during the morning. Knowing that I would be fairly active at work (and boy was I!), I brought with some grapes to keep me satiated. They worked like a charm, and held me over during most of the day.
My body has never taken kindly to fasting, so I had a small salad when I got home from work, and my second shake of the day in the late afternoon. My husband and I agreed we needed more food, and we made a simple dinner of chicken, veggies, and rice.
Day 2 I ate exactly the same, though I forgot to snack on fruit during the day while I was in the office catching up on things! By mid-afternoon I was feeling shaky, so I had a lunch of guacamole and Terra Chips to restabilize my blood sugars along with my second protein shake.
Did I crave a sandwich and dream about eating said sandwich during the first two days? Yes, yes I did. But I made it through and didn’t quit! It bares noting- many of my fellow detoxers were rock stars and successfully fasted during the first two days!
Detox Days 3-7
After prepping your body with fasting during the first two days, the next five you add in a solid meal, and the detoxification supplement, PhytoCore, to the protocol. Because I had modified the first two days by eating a meal in addition to the two shakes, this meant I just needed to add in the supplement.
These days were easy! Honestly, the only struggle I had was deciding what to make for dinner. To set myself up for success, I had filled the house with lots of fruits and veggies for snacking and smoothies. Every night I had to make us a detox friendly dinner, based on the list provided with the program. Having the list of approved foods to eat made things so much easier!
Around day 5, I did have some tastebud fatigue with the smoothies, but that was fixed quickly by changing up my smoothie ingredients. (Many thanks to Penny for recommending some yummy recipes!)
To quote Penny, “These were the easiest five pounds I ever lost.” Five pounds lost in seven days, and I can feel my body changing. I like how I feel on this program and my digestive tract is especially happy with the changes. I have decided to keep going for the full 28 day protocol, as I still have food cravings to work on and know that I need a deeper level of detoxification. Plus, who can argue with that kind of weight loss!?
In fact, I wasn’t the only one who decided to keep going on the Core Restore Detox Program. Almost every single participant in our group, employees and Senara patients alike, decided to continue on with the program! Universally, we were all sleeping better, had more energy, lost weight, and felt lighter. Weight loss ranged from 5-10 pounds in the group!
I can’t wait to continue on this journey. I’m enjoying making meals at home again, and the challenge of it is fun for me! I will check-in on my continued progress over the next few months!
