Is PRP Therapy An Effective Scar Treatment?

The scar on your leg from your bike accident doesn’t look nearly as bad as it used to, but you’re still self-conscious about wearing shorts and shorter skirts. Or maybe you had a lot of acne as a teenager and, though the blemishes have cleared up, you still have marks on your face.

You’ve tried different creams and topicals, use makeup to try and make the scars less noticeable, but you still haven’t found an effective treatment to reduce their appearance. The good news is that there is a solution to effectively erase or minimize those scars for good!

PRP, short for platelet-rich plasma, has proven to be a great treatment for microneedling and vampire facials, joint restoration, men’s health issues, and hair restoration. Since its main purpose is to help regenerate tissue growth, it can also be used as an effective scar treatment.

At the medical spa at Senara Health and Healing Center & Spa in Peoria, we offer PRP injections and facial therapies to help regenerate damaged tissue. If you have scars that you’d like to reduce the appearance of, contact us today to schedule an appointment, and learn more about how PRP therapy can effectively reduce scarring.

The Breakdown Of PRP

Platelet-rich plasma, also called PRP, is derived from the blood of the patient receiving PRP treatment. The patient has a blood draw performed, then the blood is put in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the white blood cells and growth factors in the blood.

The white blood cells are in the PRP, and the growth factors occur in platelet-rich fibrin, also called PRF. White blood cells help protect your immune system, while the growth factors encourage collagen and elastin production, as well as the regeneration of other tissues.

This combination of PRP and PRF creates a serum that can be readministered to the patient either topically or by injection. The way the PRP/PRF is administered is based on the type of scarring that the patient wants to treat.

Don’t forget — PRP is also a great skin rejuvenation treatment to fight aging.

PRP Facial For Scars

If you have acne scars or marks on your face, a microneedling with PRP facial will most likely be your best treatment option. The procedure will start with microneedling to create micro-wounds on the surface of the skin with microscopic needles. This helps break up scar tissue without causing cellular damage, and creates channels in the dermis for the PRP serum to penetrate below the surface.

After microneedling is performed, the PRP/PRF serum is applied to the face. The microneedling not only starts to break up the scar tissue, but as the serum is absorbed into the  deeper layers of the skin it also promotes collagen and elastin production at a higher rate.

PRP Scar Treatment

If you’re in search of scar treatment for other areas of your body, PRP therapy is still a great option. Instead of microneedling before administering the PRP/PRF though, the serum will be injected into the site of the scar.

Once the PRP injection is completed, the serum works to regenerate tissue and new blood vessels, which improves the texture and lifespan of the skin. The PRP therapy also stimulates keratinocytes and fibroblasts to make new collagen, which helps fill in the scarred skin.

Typically, scar treatment takes one to three sessions in order to see results. Depending on the severity of the scarring, more or less sessions will be required.

What To Expect

With a treatment that involves a blood draw and terms like “micro-wounds,” you might be worried that this procedure isn’t worth the discomfort. On the contrary! PRP therapy for scar treatment is minimally invasive, and we use topical pain relieving cream to minimize any discomfort.

If you’re having microneedling performed, it will cause some temporary inflammation as the skin heals, but the needles are small and topical lidocaine cream is provided to minimize any discomfort during the procedure.

If you’re opting for PRP injections, you will likely experience some mild and temporary discomfort or swelling around the area where the injection was administered, but this doesn’t last for long.

Either of these procedures can be performed in a medical spa, and require little to no downtime afterward to recover.
